Glossary / robots.txt

robots.txt

robots.txt is a small file that tells search engines which parts of your site to skip.

It sits at yourbusiness.com/robots.txt. Most small sites need almost nothing in it. A common mistake is a leftover line that blocks the whole site after a launch.

It is a request, not a lock. A private page still needs a password. robots.txt only asks well-behaved crawlers to stay out.

Your 7-day staging link is kept out of search engines. When the site goes live on your domain, we check that robots.txt lets Google in.
