Glossary / Canonical

Canonical

A canonical tag tells search engines which address is the official one when a page can be reached several ways.

The same page might load at www and non-www, with and without a trailing slash, or with tracking codes. Google could treat those as separate pages. The canonical tag says which one counts.

Most owners never touch this. It matters during a rebuild, when old and new addresses overlap for a while.

Think Bright pages carry a canonical tag that points at your live domain. The staging copy points there too, so nothing on the staging link competes with your real site.
