A CNAME record says one name is an alias for another name.
Where an A record points to a number, a CNAME points to another name. A common use is www.yourbusiness.com pointing at yourbusiness.com. Another is a subdomain pointing at a hosting provider.
CNAMEs are convenient because the target can change its number without you doing anything. The downside is that a CNAME cannot sit on the bare domain alongside email records.
