What you actually own when you leave a website builder

The question nobody asks at signup

You pick a builder on a Tuesday night because it is cheap and fast. Three years later you want to move, and you ask a simple question. What do I get to take?

The answer is almost never in the pricing table. It is buried in a help article, and it is usually less than you assumed. This guide lays out what each kind of platform hands back, and where Think Bright Sites draws its own line.

What a builder lets you take

Wix and Squarespace have no design export at all. You can download your text and your images. The layout, the styling and the structure stay behind. You start over somewhere else.

Webflow, Framer and a few others export code. That is better, but the code depends on their systems for forms, hosting and content management. It is a set of files, not a working site.

Your domain is the one thing you can usually take, as long as it is registered in your name. Check that today. Many owners find the domain sits under a former designer's account.

What WordPress lets you take

WordPress is open source, so in theory you own all of it. In practice you get a database export and a folder of files. They work on another WordPress host and nowhere else.

If your pages were built with a page builder, they depend on that plugin. Turn it off and the layout turns into brackets. The content is yours. Getting it out cleanly is a project.

The parts you should always own

Whatever platform you use, insist on these four. They are the difference between a move and a rebuild.

• Your domain, registered in your name, at a registrar you can log into.
• Your words, in a form you can open without the platform.
• Your photos and logo files at full size, not thumbnails scraped from the site.
• A written note of what runs where, so the next person does not guess.

Every build ships with a README that lists exactly those pieces and what to swap them for. A form endpoint. A host. A chat widget. You can hand that file to any web person and they will know what to do.

We are not a registrar. The domain stays with you, at your registrar, in your name. We only ask you to change a record when the site goes live.

Do this before you sign with anyone, including us.

• Log into your registrar. If you cannot, fix that first.
• Ask the platform for an export. Look at what comes back.
• Find your original photos. If the only copies live on the site, download them now.
• Ask who patches the site next year, and what it costs if they stop.
